Important Medicare Facts

Everything you need to know about Medicare enrollment and coverage

Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)

  • Your first chance to enroll in Medicare begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
  • Enrolling on time helps you avoid late enrollment penalties.

If You're Still Working at 65

  • You may be able to delay Medicare without penalty if you have credible health coverage through an employer.
  • It's important to confirm your employer coverage meets Medicare's requirements before delaying enrollment.

Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)

  • You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you lose employer coverage, move to a new service area, or experience certain life events.
  • SEPs allow you to enroll or change plans outside the standard enrollment windows.

Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

  • Runs October 15 to December 7 each year.
  • You can review, switch, or update your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan for the upcoming year.

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)

  • Runs January 1 to March 31.
  • Allows individuals already in a Medicare Advantage plan to switch to another Advantage plan or go back to Original Medicare (with or without drug coverage).

Medicare Advantage (Part C) – Key Facts

  • Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
  • Combines Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage in one plan.
  • Most plans include Part D prescription drug coverage.
  • Often include extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, and over-the-counter allowances.
  • Usually has lower or $0 monthly premiums, but you pay copays or coinsurance when you get care.
  • You must use doctors and hospitals in the plan's network (except for emergencies).
  • Referrals may be required for specialists.
  • Has an annual out-of-pocket maximum (up to $9,350 in 2025; many plans are lower).
  • Coverage outside the U.S. is rare.

Medicare Supplement (Medigap) – Key Facts

  • Offered by private insurance companies to work with Original Medicare.
  • Helps pay out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, copays, and coinsurance.
  • Does not include Part D prescription drug coverage — must be purchased separately.
  • Premiums are typically higher (around $150/month for many clients) but care costs are often minimal.
  • No provider network — you can see any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare.
  • Referrals are never required.
  • Some plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage.
  • No annual out-of-pocket maximum, but most costs are covered with a good plan.
