Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
- Your first chance to enroll in Medicare begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and ends 3 months after.
- Enrolling on time helps you avoid late enrollment penalties.
If You're Still Working at 65
- You may be able to delay Medicare without penalty if you have credible health coverage through an employer.
- It's important to confirm your employer coverage meets Medicare's requirements before delaying enrollment.
Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
- You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if you lose employer coverage, move to a new service area, or experience certain life events.
- SEPs allow you to enroll or change plans outside the standard enrollment windows.
Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)
- Runs October 15 to December 7 each year.
- You can review, switch, or update your Medicare Advantage or Part D prescription drug plan for the upcoming year.
Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
- Runs January 1 to March 31.
- Allows individuals already in a Medicare Advantage plan to switch to another Advantage plan or go back to Original Medicare (with or without drug coverage).

- Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
- Combines Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical) coverage in one plan.
- Most plans include Part D prescription drug coverage.
- Often include extra benefits such as dental, vision, hearing, gym memberships, and over-the-counter allowances.
- Usually has lower or $0 monthly premiums, but you pay copays or coinsurance when you get care.
- You must use doctors and hospitals in the plan's network (except for emergencies).
- Referrals may be required for specialists.
- Has an annual out-of-pocket maximum (up to $9,350 in 2025; many plans are lower).
- Coverage outside the U.S. is rare.
